Default Looking for answers on 428 cobra jet

I'm trying all kinds of places for help. I own a 68.5 cobra jet engine. I'm going to sell it when I figure a price I can live with. It seems there are different date markings on the block than normal. 4-12-68 is scratched on the front passenger side of the block. Appearing backwards and upside down indicates it happened in the mold. I want to learn why. Not a big deal, just no one can help me. Can anyone here help. Thanks Keith

Not heard of that but it may indicate it is a early CJ as they didn't appear untill mid year, maybe they left something scratched in the mold. The date code shouldread something like 8D12. 8 for the year, D for April, and 12 for the day.

Can you take a picture and post? I haven't seen one like what you describe and would love to see it. Maybe it's one of the 135 cars!

A detail photo of the valve covers also. Mark, are you talking about the first ones (maybe with no VIN stamped)?

The 135 cars were the 50 lightweights that were made to qualify for NHRA. Some ended up being the famous cars from the shops of Holman-Moody, Hubert Platt & Gas Rhonda.

I don't think I have ever seen a date like that on the exterior of the block. Obvious that it was scratched into the sand mold prior to pouring the iron for the block. You may want to post it over on the Cobra Jet forum. There are several 135 owners & people with lots of info about those cars & CJ's in general.

I like your idea for help, but been there, done that. Everybody here has helped me more in one day than they have all week. You guys show more interest than any site ever. It's quite a feeling to have something so trivial, yet so fascinating. Sure would like to figure it out. It looks like the only ones who know are the people that built it. Anybody know one? Thanks Keith
