man 17 k will get you a nice classic but to use it as a d/d??? hmm lot of money to do such with it........heck 13800 will get you my 66 and it's ready to roll ....mild 302, with t-5 tranny ,mild lope to it and all clean inside and out........fully capable of being a d/d but I won't subject it to such as owner as I've spent to much time building it.
the t-5 tranny (5 spd, last gear overdrive) is something you would really love in a daily driver as well. gives you a much better gas/mileage and doesn't wreck your heads with noise on a highway

I'm doing about 15mpg and that seems an average mpg for stock 289s (without t5) from what I've heard here on the forums.

andrew: I never knew there are collapsible steering colums for those ???

^^^^^right on!!!! my cruise R's with 4 speed were 3000 @65 with 3.50 gears and droped to 2200 with a t-5gas mileage went up too!!

The T-5 sounds like a good way to go, keep the revs down on the highway, maybe improve mileage. How much of an investment in time and money is a project like that. I'm no tranny expert, but I'm guessing it's easier to go from manual to manual than auto to manual and that would influence my initial purchase. I know some of you are wondering why I'd like a classic as a daily driver. All I can say is that I'm young, I want something different and BA and I'm fortunate enough to have the money. And why a mustang...? Well I think you all know the answer to that question or you wouldn't be here. Thanks.

Comfort is a secondary concern, but I thought about aftermarket seats that would add a degree of safety too. More important is the dependability and having an all-around solid car. Which is why I'm willing to spend that much money. Does anyone know of any good aftermarket seats?

I also use my car as my DD and it does perfectly fine, of course the fuel economy could be a little better. The total cost of mine after the resto was about $10.5k, so $17k will buy you a real nice car.

mjr, is that your '66 in the pic? You wouldn't be willing to let it go to a daily driver? I'm not as incompetent as I sound on the posts, I promise. My '77 F-150 seems to like me and did daily duty for the last 4 years.

I think my mustang is pretty comfortable to drive and it has upgraded suspension all the way around with 650lb rate springs in the front and lower higher rate leaf springs in the back global west a arms and strut rods. sits about 4" lower than stock mustangs. handles like a modern car but has better road feel.

the ride is smoother at 85mph than at 55.
