bad battery

Default bad battery

HI all,got a question about my battery.First thing my car 64.5 Conv. 260 still on generator.My car is stored throw winter,time to start it up no problem fires up let idle for awhile then tack starts to bounce up and down car dies. Car is jumped started it fires wright up runs for a few minutes then dies.Put meter on battery reads 12 volts try to start it starter trys dead.Notice when I open door battery starts to go down when I crank it battery reads 3-4 volts.Is my battery shot or something else any help would be appreciated. Well, sounds like your battery is definitely not charged. Take it to Sears and let them check it. It the battery won't hold a charge buy a new one, but if the say that the battery does hold a charge....then check your alternator.

Although I'm not sure I understand your dialect I'll take a stab at it.

It's possible that when the car was running it was running off the battery so now the batttery is weakened. Charge the battery. If it won't charge obviously it's bad. If it charges, start the car. Crank the RPMs up a bit (1200-1500) and while it's running look for around 14v at the battery. If you read 14v the generator is good which means the battery probably isn't going to hold the charge and is bad. If you don't have about 14v, jumper the F (top) and A (back) terminals of the generator together. If the voltage at the battery goes up the voltage regulator is suspect, if not, the generator is.

Here is some new info. on problem,removed positive and negitive cables off car and connected them to my van via jumpers car started up no problem .Ran for a few minutes sputtered and died,started car again fired up this time running longer.Not sure what problem is since battery in van is good.Have not checked generator yet but I will.
