I just found out today that one of my coworkers owns a tig welder.I have a nice mig welder, but i have only used it for fabricating exhaust components and welding small brackets.
So, will the tig welder work well for putting the panels and frame rails in??

IMO the tig will make superior welds almost anywhere. I have heard that a greater level of skill is required with tig welding...

How about those welder ads at the top and sideof the page?

You're better off using the MIG welder. Although the TIG will work, it's overkill. Get the MIG set up right, and you'll be a whole lot happier. I am a welder, and have access to both. I chose the MIG out of convenience and simplicity. I did all my work with the MIG using bare wire and 75/25 shielding gas. It was clean, and excellent penetration.

I was planing on using my handy craftsman gassless wirefeed welder (fluxcore I think its called ) I dont know alot about welding but thats all Ive got.

Your going to need gas if you wantthe welds to be worth a crap. I used my welder with fluxcore when i first purchased it and it doesnt flow very well. It's amazing what a difference gas makes. Less spatter and smooth strong welds.

Thanks for the info . I had planned on using the fluxcore , now I guess I need to get another welder. This is my first (resto project ) and Id hate to have it all falling apart, if I ever get it back together

Some of the Lincoln MIG units can add the gas as an optional accessory or later upgrade.

On the other hand, if you're outdoors, gas isn't all that reliable at keeping the atomsphere around the arc inert.I've heard of folks using a little gas along with fluxcore when they're stuck welding outdoors but want to keep the spatter down. Just MIG/fluxcore can be made to work acceptably well on body sheetmetal, but understandthat there's more preparation required before you can paint.

I own a mig and a tig and I have used the mig for all of my fabrication. The tig is too finicky on older sheet metal. You have to have your metal super clean for it to work or you get crappy welds. A mig is also a no brainer for welding. It takes a little more skill for the tig.
