Default 408 running hot (sometimes)

I have a 408 in my 67 vert, I have a 26 x 19 northern cross flow double pass universal racing radiator. I have a flo cooler water pump and was running 180 thermo and an electric fan. Its a zirgo 16" 3000 cfm fan.

I think my biggest mistake was buying march pulleys, they are underdrive. I have a 140 amp alt but at idle with the fan on it would discharge the batt, also I'm thinking my w/p is turning slower as well. Today I removed the elec fan, installed a 16" 6 blade flex fan and I had a 289 fanshroud sitting around so I did some cutting and made it fit my rad. Also I decided to try a 160 thermostat.

At Idle theres very little air going thru the radiator, today it was about 90+ degrees and driving around town I hit 190-200, once I hit the fwy cruising at 70 2200 rpm my temp stays between 165-175.

I am going to call march to see if I can get a crank pulley to speed things up but which elec fan pulls the most cfm, this 16" says its 3000 cfm but I have yet to find any similar fan that pulls even close to that which makes me think it is BS. My elec fan and 180 thermo had just about the same results except for fwy but I had a 180 thermo. Mayb a 190 thermo would be better?

Whats my best bet for a fan setup? dual 11's? mk8 junkyard? clutch fan and shroud? My new cars run 210 all day long but in my stang I think 190 is hot, am I crazy? also its a 500 hp 408 stroker and it only has maybe 500 miles so its still tight.....am I worrying too much?

my understanding is 160 is too cold...anyhow its only the temp at which the thermo opens. If you are running at 190-200 a 160 or 180 thermo wont make any difference.

there was a recent post about dodgy CFM ratings. The short answer is the Spal worked best. The guy tried it...problem solved. A shrouded thermo will work better than a non shrouded one to make sure all the rad surface is being utilised.

if its only getting to 190-200 in traffic but cools down no problems on the highway i wouldnt be too concerned about the belt system. Its saying "airflow" to me, not water pump speed.

hope this helps

actually, I want to increase the speed of my alt so I can run an elec fan, the 140 amp powermaster only pulls 12v at idle 800rpm, but if I give it 950-1000 rpm it pulls 14v with the fan on.

ok i understand.

what size pulley is on the alt now? Can you fit a smaller one? that would speed up your alt without having to change everything else. just an idea

I missed the bit that you already made a shroud fit. what brand is the fan?

I didn't think so but I want to stay around 190. Theres alot of fluctuation, I just drove on the fwy and around town again, now its 79 degrees and temps were from 160 to 190 at idle. I guess what I really need is good airflow over the entire radiator or as much as I can, my stock temp gauge was scaring me as at 160 it reads 2/3 at 200 its almost pegged.

Another question, my stock temp gauge sender is in the stock location(front water port intake), I have a secondary mechanical gauge in the rear water port of the intake, should there be any diff in temperature?

I have been "googling" I'm pretty sure the zirgo fan I have doesn't flow 3000 cfm, I am going to go junkyarding and look at taurus or maybe mk8 fans and see if theres a way to fit one, theres a black magic fan 3300cfm with a shroud that looks like I could make fit as well.

Just for info what is the avg temp of a high performance 400-500 hp sbf driving around town?

I would run a 195 t-stat and you temps will only fluctuate a little
Move your aftermarket (real) temp gauge's sender to the stock gauge sender location

With a 160 tstat my 410 would run between 160 and 220+
With a 195 tstat I run at 195

IME Spal fans flow the closest to their advertised ratings

I'll check them out, I in the past have maybe once made an eng run cooler with a lower thermostat, most of the time it will run hotter. Its just this double pass radiator that has me confused as they require more coolant flow, I increased the coolant flow with the flo cooler but decreased it with the pulley's but obviously my rad works at higher airflow/waterflow speeds.
