Default 5.0 in a 65-70?

I've got an 86 GT with an 88 5.0 motor. I've got rust everywheer, but the motor is good. I want to pick up a first gen mustang-preferably a 69 if i can (not a big thing if i cant though). I was wondering how easy it is to throw the newer 5.0 blocks into these cars. I would definitely convert to carb with the swap-probably a 650 cfm edelbrock and a torker II manifold and some nice cam with heads. But is the swap easy. Does everything line up. Im assuming the mounts would eb the same since the 289s and 302s were the same blocks-but then again im just assuming. Thanks for any input ahead of time.

Default RE: 5.0 in a 65-70?

Your assumption about the blocks being the same is correct....well, nearly correct. The only problem you will run into with a late model roller block in an early Mustang is if you have a manual transmission with the original Z-bar style linkage. The boss in the block for the Z-bar pivot is not there on the roller block but there is a bracket available from most vendors to easily solve that problem. Like you stated the motor mounts are a direct swap and the block will fit the car just like any other 289/302. You will need a front sump oil pan and a timing chain cover with the provision for the front mounted dipstick tube. You can run the serpentine belt accessories if you choose but you may require some mods to get it all to fit as there is usually some clearance issues at the radiator...which I solved by making special motor mounts to set the engine back 1/2".
