Default Mufflers for stock 289 V8...which sound best?

Hi guys. I bought a 68 coupe last week from an older gentleman in town, he had a few stangs and he took care of all ofthem really well. It is completely original, in excellent condition with only around 100k original miles. luckily this nice old man was more concerned with making more space in his garage than getting top dollar for it, because i know i paid maybe half of what its worth.

Anyways, i would like to know what a good set of mufflers would be for this little 289. i am more concerned with sound than performance, it's going to be my daily driver and i just want it to have a meansound. I wont be racing it at all, thats what mycamaro is for

That being said,i was wondering if some of you could post some soundclips of your 289with whatever mufflers you have. or just tell me from experience which sound better on the 289s.it seems like everyone and theirmother has flowmasters these days, and i dont knowif thats just because theyhave better marketing or if they are actually better qualitythan everyone else, but i am curious to find out.

thanks in advance for any replies.

when push comes to shove the flowmaster series is always a win the 40 series or the new super 44 are nice. if yiou want a more 60's authentic sound there are the original glasspacks on the market still.

i gonna run glasspacks on my 65

I have flowmaster 40s on my 351 and they sound awesome, there is a link to sound clips in my sig under the picture. I know it is not quite the same but the sound I get from them is awesome!

I have Flowmaster Hushpower II's on my 67 and I absolutely love them. They give more of a mellow 50's tone at idle, much less raspy than the 40 series (or any non-fiberglass packed chambered muffler, for that matter), and they absolutely scream when you get on the gas. They're pretty expensive though, so not for everyone.

I hate flowmaster 40's. They're obnoxious, raspy, and they tend to drone inside the cabin, and everybody and their grandmother has them. 50 series are at least much tamer inside. I usually prefer Magnaflows, though.

Flows sound agressive, but they also sound like every other car on the road. They're also pretty restrictive unless you run the open chamber race mufflers(which I have no idea why they call it a muffler, it's really just a square shaped exhaust pipe that does nothing to reduce noise).

Hooker Aero Chambers FTW. At least I can tell people I have a set of hookers under my back seat.

Are you just replacing the mufflers or looking to replace the entire exhaust system?

The 2 big companies would be Flowmaster and Magnaflow which are what most people go with. Flowmaster pipes and mufflers are Aluminized and have Stainless Steel extensions. Magnaflow systems are all Stainless Steel. Both are mandel bent.

I'm likely going with the Flowmaster exhaust and the 40s. Sound clips of each Flowmaster muffler can be heard here. I prefer the Super 40s myself but she says she likes the 40s better.

I don't see any reason to buy a full pre-bent exhaust system. Any decent muffler shop can fab something up for you in an afternoon, and some of the better shops even have mandrel bending tools.
