Default "New" '69 Mach 1 - Where to Start?

OK, my second post . . . . Gotta start somewhere, right?

I'm Brenda, Ricks wife. Rick picked up the car a week ago in Ohio. The car belonged to his parents when Rick was a kid. His parents sold it to his cousin in Ohio in 1989 so Rick & his brothers wouldn't fight over it. (what a sad day that must have been for those 3 teenage boys). His cousin has kept it in the garage for the last 19 years and has put about 3000 miles on it. It only has a little over 18,000 miles on it now. The car is in great shape, I think, but I don't know anything about this kind of stuff and Rickdoesn't know much more than me, what a predicament this could become!

Rick is ready to take to motor out and have it cleaned & painted. I'm just ready to wash and wax it. I am afraid to start tearing it apart not knowing where to begin and what we should and shouldn't do. It runs, we went for a drive, why does he want to take themotor out and have it painted?

Can someone help us figure out where to start and what to do first? Is there a web site that could guide us? Who do you talk to? I guess we should join a mustang club? How do you find one of those?

See, we're like newborns and it's not a good thing.

HELP. . . .

If it runs well, doesn't leak and looks as good as those pictures I wouldn't touch it.

OH, thank you so much for replying back!!

Yea, I don't want to touch it but Rick does. Look at how it shines!!! And it sounds awsome!

Rick thinks it's been painted (that would have been the original owner before his parents) and that it should have a black hood. (he's been trying to do some online research) How the heck do we find out exactly what the original paint job looked like?Should it have that black hood? We KNOW they are the origianl 18,000 miles, but why would someonehave painted it with only 10,000 miles on it? (It had 15,000 miles on itwhen his parents sold it to Ricks cousin).

The VIN#'s all match up, we're waiting to get the title now.

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

-Brenda

Thanks Dave.

I'll wait because I need answers!! And I need those answers before Rick starts rushing into something he shouldn't!

I have to authorize the money so that buys me a little time!!! Lucky for him he has such a good wife . . . . . that's me.

lol

I would not even dream of taking that car apart. Why it would have been painted....(1) they did come with black hoods and some people simply did not like that....(2) the car was damaged and repainted...(3) the factory paint was bad. I had a red 69 back when it was not a classic and my paint was nothing to write home about. It was repainted in about 72...(4) Maybe the whole car was not repainted. Those cars were particularly prone to hood damage because of the design. One little bump in the front was enough to buckle something.
As far as what it is supposed to look like, there is a member here named 4reboy with beautiful blue 69 Mach which is painted correctly. I am sure he will see this thread and he can probably help you out on the correct scheme.

Really the best advice is to wait and relax, if only because "you don't know what you don't know" and it is easy to make bad choices that Rick may later regret.

When you come across a low mileage car, most will want to keep the car as original as possible. I'd rather have a car with decent original paint. Low mileage, unrestored cars are known as "survivors" and are rare because after 40 years, most classics have been gone over at least once. It is quite a treasure to find an unrestored car that looks this nice. Regarding the hood, it is possible that just the hood was repainted because the blackout paint only goes on the hood and the cowl panel. Maybe Rick and yourself should contact a local mustang club and have someone take a look at the car. Good luck and share more photos

Hot70,

What kind of pics should I post.

The only ones I have are the pics we took with the car on the UHaul trailer for AAA to get the title transferred over to Ricks name.

Here are the pics I have. What other onesshould I post? I am sure one of the motor is the first you'll ask for. (AAA didn't need oneof them - lol)

Won't be until Saturday nite since I gotta be at my part time job at 7am!

Here are the pics we have;
