72 w/Ram Air distributor question

Default 72 w/Ram Air distributor question

Looking for someone who may have done this before? I have a 72 Mach1 (351C 4V) with a Ram Air unit. I purchased an MSD distributor and when I installed it, it was too tall and the Ram Air pan won't sit flat on the carb. I talked to the MSD tech's and they didn't have any shorter distributors to offer.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket distributor that fits with a factory Ram Air?

MSD did have some that was the same height of the original units. I ran into this on another car with the cross brace. The first one was too tall but I was able to return it and get the smaller one. If that don't do it, then I would use the original with a Pertronix.

FYI-not to change the subject but I went with the MSD on my 72 non ram air car and after it was installed the Tach quit working. MSD sent out a short wire that was supposed to fix the problem but they never said where it goes, anyone know?

To clear the distributor you're going to have to use a carb spacer. I have an MSD distributor and ram air but instead of using a carb spacer I have a Blue Thunder intake which is about 1/2 to 3/4" taller than stock. Even with that the air cleaner sits right on top of the plug wires. My next step is to get another slim spacer between the carb and the air cleaner.

Thanks for the replies!

I had a Crane Fireball in my old stock distributor, but without going into gory detail let's just say that the distributor is no longer with us :-) I purchased the MSD (don't have the part number handy). It looked great until I set the Ram Air down. As I said, MSD tech line said they couldn't help me (suggested I replace the Ram Air!).

I was considering a carb-spacer, but I haven't determined how much I can lift the Ram Air pan and still close the hood.
