If you're going to that trouble, why not upgrade to a 5 speed.
You'll get much better hiway MPGs too.
I've seen rebuilt T-5s for $900.

Yeah a top loader is nice but id go for something with a over drive like a t5 or tko you'll spend more but you get another gear its well worth it in my book.

+1 on that. if you think about swapping transmission (manual) go 5speed.
i paid 750$ for a very nice rebuilt t5.
3spd didn't bother me in the slightest. what i needed was the overdrive gear. when you go from 3 to 4 your gear ratio on highest gear will not change. it will stay 1:1
so for that the onky difference is that you would have to switch more often between first and fourth but as soon as you're driving 60 you'll be still missing the next gear you'd usually want.
on top of the T5 you'll need a few parts like a new shifter, an adapter plate and you will have top get a different yoke and might to adapt your driveshaft.
It was hassle for me as I live in europe, but WELL worth it
the petrol you save with a t5 is immense if you drive highway a lot

Haha i wanted a 4 cuz i wanted 2 keep it semi-looking original...I havent drivin this car on the highway yet (have driven it those speeds )....i just like having the 4 speed because it will be geared lower in low gears.

Ive got a c4 for sale built by PA i was selling it for 1500 w/ shifter and trq converter so I cant imagin you would spend too much upgrading to a 4 speed. Not sure how much a 3 would go for

1sweet65,
Please specify: are you talking about converting an automatic 3-speed to 4-speed??
Then you want an AOD trans from a later model. You won't notice much diff in MPGs unless you do some hiway driving though.

We were talking manual trans, then go straight to 5-speed. Just get a hurst shifter to keep that origional look. There's no MPG advantage from 3 to 4-speeed on a manual. The 4-speed just keeps the revs up while racing.

yah i'm confused now as well

if you are talking manual, then there is no difference in gas mileage from 3 to 4 gears as the gearing ration for the highest gear is 1:1 in both

recommendation is 5spd, but it's your choice in the end.
I got a t5 shift stick from NPD that looks stockish, so from looking at it noone would be able to tell
