I used Castrol 10w-30 until the engine was broken in and then switched to 10w-30 Mobile 1.

If your running a classic you want to buy some ZDDP addtive, find it on Ebay.

ZDDPLUS is one of the best ones. It put back the Zinc and other anti-wear agents that was removed from the oil that older engines need. It was still in Diesel truck oils for a while but its now gone from them all. Rousche and Val now have a speical blend of it that you can find at Ford dealers. Says for break-in and racing only but thats to keep the EPA from pulling it.

I always used 20-50 in the summer and 10-30 in the winter. Anyone use Royal Purple? Is it worth the extra $?

15W-40 is pretty thick, but it'll work if it doesn't get very cold where you are. I run Valvoline VR-1 10W-30, which is specifically designed with added ZDDP content for flat tappet cams.

I tried Mobile 1 but it gets dirty just as quick as regular dino oil with this old school engine. So I'm thinking it's better to use dino juice and just change it more often. The advantage of synthetic is it takes longer to break down the oil due to heat, but if it's dirty, what's the point of keeping it in longer? It's probably better changing more often anyway, since I only drive it once a week.
Also it's so easy to change on the 71 compared to new cars, don't even hafta jack it up to get the oil or filter.

I also use valvoline VR1 10w-30 racing oil

haven't had it in long enough to know if it really makes a difference but it sounds nice.
