well, it looks as thou i am going AOD. the aod mentioned earlier was being bought from a friend and last night he told me i could have it as a wedding gift. i tried for a 9in with a posi to, he told me to talk to my wife on that one. oh well.

so, what i have is an 86 AOD out of a lincoln town car. i am thinking of a shift kit or valve body to improve shifting and performance. will a shift kit be sufficient or would the valve body be best?
i guess i will end up replacing the gears also. doing futher investigation, i have 2.78 gears. 3.50 gears and a locker seem to be on the horizion.

thanks for your input on the t5 delema. it was appreciated.

I should pick it up on mon or tues. I went ahead and had it rebuilt with a b&m shift kit. I figured it was the time to do it, since it was out.

This question seems to come up every couple of weeks. You'll be happy with a stock AOD, but happier with a stock manual. Now if you wanted a better experience you can put in a OD lock-out (new valve body) that will allow you to shift it like a manual trans (1,2,3 then OD with a switch). In stock form first and second are in a shared position on the shifter. A trick most fox body guys do is start in first, shift to the second position (3rd on selector) then after the trans has shifted into second gear put the shifter back into the first position (1st on the selector), this holds the trans in second until your ready for 3rd. A good valve body you will be able to shift 1,2,3 then flip a switch for OD, a bit expensive but will come with a shift kit and you will never have to buy another one. The weakest part of that trans is the input shaft, only good to 450hp. This can easily be replaced with another better two piece shaft to keep the "locking" of the converter working. A single input shaft is good for 650HP but you will loose that capability, not good for everyday city driving. In stock form there not so good, but if you spend the same money on both, the AOD will last longer and can be fun to drive or in my case, awesome..

A shift kit modifies the valve body...

I went the less expensive route. I anticipate only having about 300-350 hp at the wheels and wont be drag racing the car. I just wanted firmer shifts and for it to break the tires loose when it changes gears if I am "gettin on it". I dont think it will do much of anything until I change the gears. 2.78 gears dont give much bottom end but I can run 200 mph. lol. planing on 3.50 or 3.73.
