Default carburetor question

i have a 66 mustang gt and have recently rebuilt the engine. kept it all stock except for roller rockers, crane 260 cam, harmonic balancer and hooker headers. it has a 4v carburetor and im looking to replace it. is the edelbrock performer 500 cfm carb a good way to go? i've purchased the thunder series 650 cfm AVS Carburetor, but i'm thinking it may be more than i need. any insight would be grealty appreciated.

It might be if you have a 289 or 302 with that cam, but it depends on other things too. What elevation do you live at. Higher altitudes will tolerate more cfms.

I just rebuilt my carb, it's a 4 barrel Holley 4160, 600 cfm, and I've read that they're a great all-around carb for average HP v8's. It runs great in my 70 Mach 1 with a 351W that's mostly stock.

i've got a 289 v8. i just read this article and it said the 500 would be optimal....(in their case, which is similar to mine.)

I'm an old Motorcraft guy. Can't beat a 4100 with your set-up.

I like the orig equipment as well. I made the mistake of putting an Edlbrock 750 which was too big for my stock 351 Clev. My car didn't have the orig carb. After fighting with that I bit the bullet and purchased a rebuilt 4300 from Pony Carbs using their core. I believe it's rated at 610cfm. Best money I invested in the car!

Good choice Jeff. It is hard to beat the original carbs designed for these cars. I know with a lot of mods that other carbs may be superior, but if you don't stray away very far from the original set-up, then just stick with the original carb.
