I imagine it cost them alot at the time but now there are a lot more perfomance parts available so you could probably get 500hp or close to it without any reengineering. I have the SAE article if anyone is interested in what all they had to do to reach 640hp.

Going with an all aluminum 460 would definately not be cheaper than boosting a mod motor. I don't even think anyone produces an aluminum big block but if there is I imagine the block alone would cost more than what you could build a 500hp mod motor and it would still weigh more I'm sure. Even the aluminum small blocks cost over $5k.

You can pick up a used 4.6 4V for around $500 drop in a new rotating assembly that will handle up to 1000hp for $1500. Then just add what ever type of boost you want. You would have your 500hp mod motor for under $5k. It would still be reliable enough for a dailey driver and get decent gas mileage. What would it cost to do the same with a small block?

Alum 429 block is about 5 grand up iron is about 3 grand up.But the iron one you can take to a 806ci.500hp small block is easy efi 302 and a twin turbo kit which would be around that 5 grand mark also.

Isn't 500hp pushing the limits of a 302 block? So to make a 500hp 302 you'd need a dart block or something. Which would add an extra $2k. I wouldn't think that a TT 302 would be a good street motor.

depends a lot on what year the block is and a tt 302 is fine if you back the boost down for daily driving.Boost controlers are cheap and easy to use.

The alternator fits with the stock frame rail/front aprons with some room to spare.

Last thing yesterday I bolted the T56 on to the motor (to check for trans tunnel clearance/shifter location).

The 03 Motor won't fit with the shock towers (and stock upper control arms) with the stock alternator setup on the 03. If you were to relocate the alternator it might though (as it would be basically the same setup as a non 03 which many guys have put in and still used the stock suspension).

With my motor I am going to be using the stock oil pan off of the 03, the only thing that needs to be relocated is the oil filter (the stock 03 stuff will hit the frame rail).

I am very close to fitting the motor under the stock hood. I think if I lower it approximately 3/8" it will clear without problems. The IAC is the only thing hitting last night.
