It is usually referred to as ceramic coating and it will last a long time, unless you use them for engine break-in with a flat tappet cam. That will burn the coating right off. Installed after break-in and they look great.

Whats the cost? A better new pair of headers could be less and more efficient

You bring up a good point. It's not cheap. The only reason I had mine done was because they were like a year or two old and they fit great so I had them done. I think it cost me about $250?
I would only make sure you shop around because Ceramic Coated headers can range from $350 - $900 bucks.

pros and cons...

pro - keeps your engine bay a lot lot cooler and as a result your water temp and your inside temp. you can do old headers provided they are in good condition (structurally not visuallly) and the process will extend their life. You must do inside and outside for full benefit.

cons - cost and con artists! I've seen dyno results showing a very slight drop in performance and ive yet to see any results showing the increases which some suppliers claim. Not to say it aint so, just not evidenced.

we did a set on a race car 2 years ago. no noticeable change in power. massive difference to floor temp (no longer burning the soles of my feet) and big drop in engine operating temp between stages from around 195 to 180 with no other changes.

+1 - can you install ceramic headers at rebuild or is this a bad idea?
