Default Automatic Transmition Question (c4)

I purchased a new pan from summit to replace my stock one. When looking I found some pans were for 70's and up. I was under the impression that a stock ford pan was good from 1965-1973. Is this not right? Will the new pan work?

Also When it comes to fluid, is it ok to use Original Trick Shift ATF vrs the synthetic?

This is what I bought:

Here is a picture of my old pan and transmission

It should work. Some of the 70 and up pans had the fill tube screwed into the pan. Yours doesn't and the pan you bought dosen't. You should be ok.

When refilling its 5 1/2 qts of fluid, right?

Will this fluid meet or exceed Mercon or Dexron III requirements

the diff is the case dip stick tube vs the pan dip stick tube. this looks like the correct one for you. Did the unit recommend a filter extension? Some deep pans require an extension to lower the filter further into the pan.

Acccording to the pan specs it's the same capacity.I would drain the converter to when you change it and it should hold between 8 & 9 quarts. Unless your trans has been rebuilt and had different frictions installed like rmodel65 said it should take type F.

I let it drain over night and about an extra qt 1/2 fell. Im going to give it another 8 hours before the fill. I cant believe how much fluid was still in there after the initial pan drop.

hmmm, I was under the impression that type F was for in the '70s. Type F was the Ford specification for auto trans fluid prior to 1977. Beginning in '77, Ford began specifying Mercon fluid in most transmissions, and in all by '81.

I thought Mercon fluid far surpassed type F, that is why type F is nearly impossible to find at the auto part stores.
