Default 2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust piping?

At what point does one need to step up to 2.5 inch piping? I need to order my exhaust but I'm not sure what size to get. Please help.

Good question. I have a mild 4V 302 with true dual at 2.25. Curious what people say. I would like to get some heads at some point, I wonder if that is the threshold to go to 2.5?

bigger aint always better.
I'm sure there's a theoretical point which someone has done the math for.

the best sounding 351 i ever heard was around 480hp thru 2x 2.25"
a smaller pipe IMO sounds crisper and cleaner. bigger pipe will give you deeper if thats what you like.

this poll should be good for at least 2 days of arguments

Just slap a 4" on there! You know you want to.

I'm not helping. But seriously I would go with the 2.5" I love the deeper sound.

if you already have 2.25" piping i guess you're just wasting money and time to step up to 2.5"

I would say at 300hp (350cid) or so, you need 2.5" duals. When you start getting above 400hp (400cid), 3" duals is needed to prevent exhaust pulse issues. More important than the sizing, though, are the restrictions. Do not put 2.5" pipe in, and then bend it with a regular bender. That defeats the entire purpose of larger pipe. Either weld J-Bends or mandrel bend the pipe.

FWIW, I put dual 3" with welded J bends on my 383. It flows nicely and sounds pretty dang good if I may say so myself.
