I'll be in Germany next week and i hope to have it sitting at home waiting for me when I return. I'll be at car at weekend to pull the old engine.
Do i actually have to get the transmission out of the car or can I just unbolt the trans (leave trans in car), loosen engine mounts and pull up and forward ? I'm not going to pull engine and trans out at same time. just thought I might save time if I leave the transmission where it is ?!

I also recommend flushes at least every 2 years, because that's pretty much manufacturer recommendation for anything not running a long-life coolant. I daily drive my '67 this way and I've never had an issue with corrosion. Conversely, I have had some cooling issues when I had too much coolant in the system.
Decent coolant shouldn't break down that quickly. Sure, in 5 years you can expect significant degradation, but not less than 2. I mean, if you're really that concerned, flush it and fill it with GO5.

got engine and gearbox out now, thecar looks very sad without it.
The Z-bar was a *** to get out as the bolts were hard to get to and header is wrapped around it (2 pipes under, 2 pipes over)
.. wonder how I'll get at the bolts one my new engine is in
as to the pulleys you were right,old is 3 bolt on balancer.
Will I just get a new pulley? will check on NPD catalogue for the adaptor if that'll do
The radiator I don't see a difference between mine and the one from my friends 66 V8. they're both tiny. same height, length and width. Buddy is going to bring it for a flush and check while I'm in germany next week.
I counted the teeth on my old flywheel and it's 160 tooth? I counted that twice. i only ever heard of 157 and 164 ?!
so from where I'm standing I'm probably buying (cry):
pulley, heater core, flywheel, full clutch ...

the seller is throwing in a set of pulleys (crank, waterpump and alternator) for a few bob wuheee :-) now i have to get a clutch and flywheel but heaven't decided yet what set. Flywheel as a few teeth are worn and i'm in no mood to pull the trans ever again.
the motor mounts are good ( i guess they are only 3-4 years when engine was changed to 289)
my problem is radiator. i can get it flushed and checked no problem (*loads of rad shops around) but how will I know if the one I have is not a 6cylinder?
is there any way to tell them apart ? measurements ? anything?

man you're full of good info. I'll measure when at car. i'm quite sure it'll be the 6 cylinder one in there.
- the radiator top is gold under painted black
- the inlet hose is two piece. two hoses stuck together, maybe because of the smaller inlet
- the car never had a thermostat, maybe the original owner thought that will help against overheating ?!
i'll measure on the weekend. But sounds like I'll have to get a new rad and upper/lower hose
