Default How does my pinion depth look?

I put the 9" diff. back together yesterday. The backlash is set at .008" and this is what my pattern looks like

Does that look ok? Is there any special thing you are supposed to do when checking the pattern? I am taking it to a shop tomorrow that has offered to look at it for me but i wanted to see what everyone on here thought first.

Thanks for looking!

Hard to tell, the pattern isn't very clear, but it looks ok. How's the backlash?

Hehe. It's pinion marking grease. Paint-like texture, but doesn't harden.

.008" is ok, but...looking at it again, it seems the pinion depth might be a little on the low side...but it also looks like you're turning the gears the wrong way. There's almost no marking on the drive side of the gears. Can you run it again and see what it looks like?

i ran the gear both directions, that is the best marking i could get. I used my hand to put some resistance on the gear when i turned it.

The original shim was .02", it left just a small mark on one side. I tried no shims and the pattern flipped to just a small mark on the other side of each tooth. I tried .01" shim and this is the pattern i got. I didn't get any shims smaller than .01" so i would have to buy some if i needed to change it.

You may need to put a load on the ring gear to get a good mark.

Yeah, find yourself a prybar and jam it in between a couple of the ring gear bolts (if it's not a Trac-Loc), then run the test again while pushing on the prybar.
