Default how come my car doesn't roll like new cars

as soon as i let go of the gas my car is slowing down pretty fast even down a hill (302/c4)

i upped the idle a little and it actually is better at rolling but anyways i was just wondering is it becasue i have straight pipes and the back pressure just slows down the car or what?

how is it in neutral. if it's the same then the problem is wheels, bearings brakes, etc. if it's normal then it's engine/transmission.

Does this represent a change in how fast it loses speed or a change in whatever other vehicle(s) that you drive? Perception can get confused if what you are comparing against changes.

Have you checked your tire inflation pressures lately? Or replaced your tires recently? Done any mods that affect ride height?

All of the manufacturers spend considerably more time and expense to minimize aerodynamic and rolling drag than they did 40 years ago.

my car rolls like new ones unless im in 2nd gear at 3500 rpm and let off the gas real quick it actually pulls you forward out of the seat just a bit

When on level ground I can roll the car backwards when sitting in the seat. I open the door and can use my left leg to push the car back takes little effort. In the garage naturally don't try this at an intersection.....

in neutral my car rolls forever just like newer automatic cars in drive they just keep speeding up down a hill

my rear end gears are 3.80 and no new changes recently its just always been like that where u let go of gas and bam its slowing down

All the new automatics have overdrive 4th or 5th gears to get better MPGs.
Try driving the new car in 2nd or 3rd gear and it will "slow down" just like your Mustang.

You can make it "roll" like the newer cars by swapping out your 3.80 gears for 2.70 in the rear (The 3.80s are ment for drag racing so your accelleration will suffer but MPGs will be better). A better option is swapping your C4 for an overdrive trans like an AOD or T-5.

dont forget newer cars are missing a lot of pistons and displacement so they dont compression brake nearly as well as these V8s. In drive when coasting the large v8 puts quite a bit of drag on the system.
