Now, that sounds like a very sensible set-up for a street car. What kind of RPM's are you running at highway speeds of let's say 70?

I am running around 3200 rpm. At 20 to25mph 1st gear C4 tranny with B&M shift kit and 3000 stall converter 8" traction lock and 265/60/15 BF Goodrich T/A'S you will roast the tires.[sm=gears.gif]

Sorry about the silence

Just got back in from vacation and w 3 kids-6, 4, 21 months the honey do list puts me on line at 11:05 pm

thanks for all the thoughts and l'll try to be more specific and answer as many questions as I can.

Here is what i have:

600 cmf eldb carb
Ceramic headers-long
6al msd ignition w/ coil and new disbt (not yet installed)
aod w/ 4.11 gears
factory a/c
'normal' cam-sounds like stock idle
disk brake kit for front only [necessitates new wheels/tires]

What i want [i think]

350 to 400 hp
run my factory air
As Soaring says-i want to keep it a daily driver
would be willing to keep my 302 and also have the $ to go 351 if that is the better option.
beef up the aod-wont 'hold' in first gear. i want to spin tires going from 1 to 2nd. will do now, but i guess i just want more.
17" wheels-have 14 inch now looking for chrome torque thrust 2's

Love the car and want to keep it looking somewhat stock-no NOS or turbo.

You guys are great!!! I really appreciate all the info and interest. As you can tell i am a novice in this area but have been bitten by the bug! I must admit i was a former Chevy die hard, but this car and the history and 'fan fare' i get when driving this car is incredible.

Again, sorry to not get back sooner, but the beach and kids had a great time in Hilton Head. Too bad hardly no classics down there that i saw!!

in catching up--my aod car w/ 4.11 gears runs between 2100 and 2300 rpm at 70 mph on hw. love it now it has been tweeked. only problem is that i cant hold it in 1st gear for a hard shift to 2nd. any hints?

my budget is not really a problem, but i dont want to do something crazy.

In following the prior 'poster' i may just do what he suggested on the buying of heads, carb and cam. will i be able to use afr's 225 with a 302? will the intake clear?

I just dont want to make a mistake going with a 351/408 setup. 500 hp sounds great, but will i have to redo everything? IE-trans @ estimate of 2000, rear end @ 1000, front suspension $?.

I like what soaring said about this being a daily driver, but i sure want to have a great motor. Someday I'll go nuts and get a super snake, but until then I just like discussing and looking over my power options.

my thanks again for all your help.

by the way-i took advice on the aod swap and love it. ran into some problems and hope other will touch base with me on the c4 to aod trans swap. hopefully some of my research and head ache can benefit someone else.

thanks agian for your help!!

AOD is Fords 4 speed Automatic Over Drive transmissiom. The older ones are non-electronic controlled and can be adapted to the first generation MUSTANGS. It allows you to lower your rear gears from , say 3:00's to 3:80's and not change you final drive RPM's at freeway speeds.
Oh, and don't bad mouth a C4, as it's better that a C6 any day!

Cheers [sm=icon_cheers.gif]
