Default Someone clarify...

...what engine i have.

according to the VIN, it was originally a C-code 289. i have no idea what the previous owners had done to the car, but when i got the car the engine looked like it hadn't been touched since the day it was assembled

BUT when we had the intake off the block had a very prominent "302" stamped on the top. so what do i have here? i know 289's were being dumped for 302s in late 68...

maybe i have a 302 block with 289 internals? was this done to some of the 68 coupes? idk its just been bugging me for a while

or maybe a 302 block with 289 heads?

You remember those numbers on the back of the block, behind the intake? Post those along with your VIN, because I think I may have been reading them wrong.

don't you need the numbers behind the starter? or is that just the date code?

I don't think ford used 302's with 289 internals, but it was the other way around. When they were switching over to the 302 they still had 289's leftover, so they just put in the 302 internals. Your engine might not even be the original one to your car, if you check the code behind the starter it will tell you the date, and if it's way off from when your car was produced then it is most likely a different engine

It's a 68' 289 2 barrel carb built in a coupe in San Jose.

It's a 289, they started using 302 blocks in 68 when the ran out of 289 blocks. My 68 had a 302 block in it. 289/2v too.

+1

VIN matches, it's the original block for the car, I just wasn't reading it right. Ford dumped 289 internals into 302 blocks when they ran out of the old 289 castings. No sense making extra 289 castings.
