Question Ignition Coil Hookup

I have a Pertronix Ignitor II coil for my 65. Can I hook it up to the factory coil wire? The reason I ask is that it is a resistive wire. It only supplies a resistance when running and not during start. If not where is a good place to get switched 12v when the key is on run but not on accessory?

I would think that someone else has experienced this. Is it not an issue to worry about? Its just something I thought could pose a problem, if the coil wasn't setup for it.

wht don't you just bypass the resistor wire.
run a cable parallel to it that connects to start of resistor wire and end of resistor wire. This way you should get 12V and you can easily remove it if needed.

Under the dash, theres a lead off the ign switch that runs to the coil, which is the resister wire with a bullet connector. You can splice off that point and provide 12V switched instead of the 9V at the stock lead

in my 66, it's the red/green lead, that changes to pink after the connecter.

What ignition module do you have? If it's the Pertronix I, you can't run 12V with that coil. Jonward and I found this out the hard way. Running the Pertronix I unit on 12V with an aftermarket low-resistance coil will burn up the module in short order. The only way to run 12V with that module is to use an internally-resisted coil.

If you've got the Pertronix II, you're good to go. That module actually wants 12V, and the transistors inside are rated for the extra current you'll be putting through it.

The directions for my Pertronix Ignitor I and Flamethrower I said to leave the resistor wire in place giving 9V rather than 12V without the resistor, as starfury said. I guess otherwise it would fry.

Thanks for the information. I'll just tap into the red/green wire before the pink wire run a good wire along side the original one from under the dash.

The coil is a Flame Thrower II 0.6 ohm. The distributor is Pertronix Billet that has Ignitor II electronic ignition module. So, I am going to bypass the ballast resistor wire.

Oh man, you guys just opened a can of worms for me. So you are all saying that the Ignitor I should not be running off of a straight 12 volt flamethrower coil? Thats what I have. I just installed it and its running strong, but should I be waiting for it to crap out on me now? Its installed, Ignition to Flamethrower coil to Pertronix I. Whats the deal?

Sorry for Hi-jacking..
