Default C4 & putting it in park question

im figuring this may be the issue but thought id hit you guys up to double check before i start to playing around with it this coming weekend.

'65 mustang with a C4 trans. I have an issue with the trans locking into park. I have become used to putting the car in park, and playing with the shift lever a little until i hear it lock and i will then put my left foot on ground with the door open and push back to make sure its engaged.

Im thinking this is just an issue with where the linkage is adjusted to and i just need to make a real slight adjustment on the slotted area of the linkage, would this be correct?

from there i know i need to get the bushing rebuild deal for the slop/side to side play of the lever itself.

i know the slop isnt whats causing this issue as it doesnt seem the shifter marks line up when im in gear (when in drive the orange line is a little off etc)

Wow... mine does that. When I place my C4 in to gear and into park etc. I have to push on the ground to lock it into gear, (especially the nutral safety switch).

Guy told me I need to replace my hog head in the rear end. More money to spend

... why would you have to replace something in the rear end?

the park lock & neutral safety switch are on the trans ....

Because, When the car is in park, I can push the car about 12" forward.

now is the trans technically in park (with the lock pin actuated) or is the shifter in park and it takes 12" for the pin to actuate and lock trans because the shifter is off?

I can play around with the shift lever and get it to lock right away, other times i have to move it around a bit and double check with the ol push.

im faaaaaaar from an expert when it comes to transmissions but i dont see how the rear end would effect the trans when its in park as the car has to go through the trans to get to the rear end.

The rear end has no effect on the trans locking in park. Fords are famous for jumping out of park or not locking in park. you need to adjust either your shifter linkage or get into the trans and have a look at the parking pawl. Here's a shot of the installation.

If your shifter is sloppy it can affect the car going into park properly. You need to bebuild that first. It is simple and will take you no time. When you reinstall it adjust the linkage at that time and that should solve the problem.

so do i need something like this:

IN-574

http://www.virginiaclassicmustang.co...p?itemid=IN574

or something like this:

IN-579

http://www.virginiaclassicmustang.co...p?itemid=IN579

granted becuase of the price i'm just going to buy both. just wanting to make sure these are the rebuilds you are talking of that i should do first.

edit:

ended up ordering both kits from CJPP. Was going to call VAM tomorrow and see about 2nd day air shipping rates but decided againts it. the car is in iowa and i will be heading there weds. so im hoping i may get the order while im there but im guessing not since its easter weekend.

sorry about the link. I probably saved it wrong due to the size restrictions. go to pg 7-40 of the FSM.
