Default Lincoln? rear end

Guys,
I can get this rear end for $200.00. The guy says it is a 9" out of a '78 Lincoln. Can you identify it from just looking at the pic? Is it worth $200? (the passenger side brakes are there too) I want to put it under my 68 coupe without too much hassle.
Should I pull the trigger on this?
Thanks

I can't tell from that picture. One test that seems to hold true, if you can get to all the nuts holding the 3rd member in with a socket, it's an 8". If you have to use wrenches on a couple of them, it's a 9". At least that's what I've been told.

It may be way too wide. See the table: http://www.ridgenet.net/~biesiade/Fordrears.html

This site is also a great resource: http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

Since it has spring perches for coil springs and not leaf springs it is not a Versialles rear end. Its probably a continental or mark rear.

I would measure it first to make sure its got an acceptable width. You will also have to add leaf spring perches to it. Thats not really too big of a deal, but you have to make sure they are positioned correctly.

Is it already a traction lock? It probably has a lousy gear ratio. You will want to swap out for somewhere between 3.00 gears and 3.50 or 3.70 gears. It most likely has something like 2.50.

Does he know what type of lincoln it came out of? That would help you alot for seting up the brakes if you want to use the Lincoln brakes. Otherwise you can probably just keep drums on the back.

+1 My 9inch came out of a 79 Versallies and it had leaf spring perches.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I am going to pass on this one and wait for some thing better (ie, less tweaking......just a drop in fit) to come along.
