Like someone said earlier in the thread the carb size depends on the engine build. The 302 in my 69 F100 cost me about $7,500.00 in parts and machine work,(15 years ago), with me doing the port matching and assembly. It runs a 750 Holley with no problem, however my nephew tried the same carb on a stock 302 in a Maverick and it was way to much for it.

Dumb question, how do mufflers affect engine performance and overall hp (technically)
Not a dumb question. Basically, but not technically you want to increase the amount of fuel air your car can burn and still create power. Larger pipes than stock usually help at the back end by allowing more space. (you can get more water through a firehose than a garden hose). You don't want to go too big because the engine also requires a bit of back pressure from the pipes to create torque.

Read this article (go back to page 1) for some explanations. (page 3 of "plans for ponies")

Ever wonder why in the old days, old racers used to open up their pipes without any restriction of getting rid of the exhaust? The headers cause enough back pressure, but you want a free flowing system that will get rid of as much burned gases as is possible. That's why guys upgrade to "X" pipes and such, and buy loud mufflers that just barely pass inspection for street use.
