Power Steering Fluid

Power Steering Fluid
Back in the day it was common practice to put ATF in the power steering system. Does anyone still do that?
I'm going to replace my C4 transmission with an AOD out of a '92 Mustang LX. I've been told to use Dextron/Mercon III instead of Type F fluid.
I haven't gotten into the power steering system on this car yet, but it has a leak. I haven't pinpointed where the leak is coming from, but something is going to replaced soon - either hoses or the pump itself. Fresh fluid will be going in.
Is it time to buy some overpriced "power steering fluid"? Stick with Type F? Or switch to Merc III since I'll be using that for my AOD?

Stick with the type F in your steering. If at some point you do a full rebuild of the power steering system with new hoses, cylinder and pump, then you can go to the newer mercon fluid. My rebuild C4 now runs Mercon. Not a good practice to mix the fluids though.

Use the Type F fluid as the factory recommends. It is what the seals and hydraulic system was designed to use. Also, Type F doesn't thin out as easily as other fluids, which can cause a pressure loss in the system.
