Default 67 mustang shakes while trying to start off

My 67 mustang has a 4 speed. When i try and take off the car shakes violently and rattles. once you start rolling it goes away. Its not an engine problem. I have seen the rear wheels shaking when it does it. So what can it be? rear leaf spring bushings? that is my guess, but i would like some more opinions. BTW, Are there any of the old forum members on here? I havent been on the classic section in a long time, and i dont recognize anybody... except vallyfirearms, i saw his name around somewhere.

First place I'd look is motor and tranny mounts. Second place is the clutch z-bar bushings. If you can shake the z-bar left/right or up/down, the bushings/felts are shot. Next most likely is the clutch itself. A failing or contaminated (from a rear main leak) clutch will cause a chatter when taking off.

Leaf spring bushings are a possibility, but not as likely. They'd have to be really, really bad.

I agree that it sounds a little like clutch chatter. Do you have an aluminum flywheel or metallic clutch disc? How old is your pressure plate? Maybe the springs are weak? Maybe the flywheel is not true?

If you aren't getting a similar shaking when stopping, or really poor handling when you get on or off the throttle (or brakes) in a corner, it probably isn't the springs or their bushings.

Does this shaking only happen if you're leaving hard or also when you try to leave slow and easy?

Well, you have to leave EXTREMELY easy for it not to shake, and even then it shakes alittle. The clutch has been replaced along with a new flywheel, and the Z-bar has had all its bushings replaced also.. The car did it before and after the clutch being installed, so i do not think its the clutch.

Maybe you need to check the pilot and transmission input shaft bearings. Clutches behave poorly from a dead stop if the tranny input shaft isn't properly aligned with the crank and adequately supported, not nearly so bad once you're rolling. Guess how I might know this (different car, different time, but still . . . ).

Do you have the correct 4 speed? the big block 4 speed has a shorter input shaft and it will not go into your pilot bushing.
