Default Back with a 3.55 ratio - Feedback

Hi friends,

I am back from the mechanic and they swapped my stock 2.79 rear end to a new 3.55. The reason why I wanted to do it is because since the new heads + new cam I had a lot of hesitations, the car was difficult to launch and it would stumble under too much load.

Well, these issues are gone I did not have a chance to drive it too far (it was really really warm in San Francisco today and it was rush hour) but it felt way better. Easy to launch, no need to rev too high before changing gear, it does not stumble in 3rd under 2k RPM, perfect! I definitely was not running in the correct gears for my cam.

I can now highly recommend 3.55 with T5. The 1st gear is shorter but not too short and the whole car feels lighter now. It did not have a chance to try 5th gear yet.

Plan for tomorrow after work: 50 miles of nice roads to give you a better feedback!

(arf, it would be perfect without this rear main seal leak)

excellent! now time to do a good perf tune, tweek the carb, curve the dizzy, adj the initial timing, etc. You may be happy now, but when you get everything working together perfectly, it's seat of your pants, eat my dust fun. BTW, you should be real happy with those gears, not to insane on the highway.

btw, are you sure you have a rear main leak, and not a loose valve cover or loose oil pan bolts? Especially since you done all this work. Find a buddy with tools and just go through the bolts to make sure they're tight.

I ran a 3.73 with a T5 in my tbird, and I liked it. Like you say the first gear is short but It would destroy tires up through third gear.

Once I finish with the motor rebuild the next project will be installing an AOD and I plan to include a set of 3.80s in my trac lock.

Glad you like now get out there rape some asphalt !

It was $575 part + labor + tax + small tuning of the carb.
