clutch problems
hi all,
my buddies clutch was chattering. it's a 68 mustang with what we thought would be a 68 289 (c-code car). when I ordered my clutch I just ordered one for him as well
10 spline, 1-1/16shaft and 10" dia
So last week they took off the clutch that was in there, put the new one one and it was completely different size. the clutch that was in there was 11" according to them and couldn't use the one I ordered :-(
So when they were putting it together I called over and sure it was D10E-6015-AA casting on the block which makes this thing a 302.
we popped it all in went to a show and on the way back it would chatter again and finally pop. the pedal went all in. no more clutch. They had the car towed home then.
Going to take it apart again on weekend. But if I gave him my 10" flywheel (the old one) for resurfacing. Couldn't he use the new clutch with it? would he need a different starter?
And we used the new release bearing with the old clutch (the resurfaced one). new clutches release bearing was diaphragm style) while the old clutch is long style. I think that's what it's called. it has 3 fingers instead of a diaphragm
Any thoughts ?

There are a ton of different pressure plate bolt patterns for different diameter clutches. Some new flywheels are tapped for multiple patterns. You may not know if the flywheel will work until you try to put his pressure plate on it. As for the starter, are the flywheels the same tooth count?

i'll count them again once we have that clutch out again.
i counted my old flywheel twice and came up with 160. so i gave up. will recount.
I can actually match the old flywheel to the new clutch in his garage. So i'm mainly wondering about the starter.
will get back with toothcount of both of em. i only remember seeing that his starter (in his current application) has 9 teeth.

One other think to consider is both flywheels need to have the same balance (i.e. 28oz for old motors, 50oz for new 302s, or 0oz internal for some aftermarket rebuilds). From the casting number, it looks like a 1971 302 from a Torino right? That would make it a 28oz stock balance if it has not been changed, but it could have, so it needs to be verified.
