"Best" is relative and not quantifiable. You need to decide what motor you want based on your budget and the end goal you have for the car.

That said, it's going to take some work to cram a 429 in the engine bay of that car. You can stroke a 351W to 427ci and it'll fit like a glove, or dump a 390/428 in, but a 385-series motor will probably require notching the shock towers.

I would go with the 351.. its defianately easier and cheaper to get parts for and you could stroke it to a 408 and make a beast of a motor.. Go for it man..

I'd suggest a 351C, if you stroke that out to 393 or 408 it'll be a monster. I've seen it noted several times (once even in a Chevy book) that the Cleveland can produce more horsepower per cui than any other production V8. Granted it may seem a bit more expensive than a 351W, but a set of stock closed chambered 4 barrel heads breathe enough for ~400cui while with the Windsor you'd really need an aftermarket set. But if you had to choose between those two engines I'd go for the Windsor, that is unless you want your car to handle like a Zamboni.

Blasphemer, and wrong to boot. Long gone are the days when chevy parts were always cheaper than ford parts. Unlike Chevy, Ford ran the 5.0 and 351W for 35 years with basically no changes to the block. Parts are cheap and plentiful.

Like what? I sell parts all day and I can tell you that it doesn't make a bit of difference for standard replacement parts. At least Ford could keep their block the same. Half the people I get coming in to buy parts for their hot rod GM whatever don't have a clue of the year of the block. You can't even find a damn oil pan gasket without knowing that.

With the increase in popularity of fox body 5.0's and the fact that there are literally millions of mustangs still on the road, performance part availability has skyrocketed in the past 10 years. After a quick poke around Summit, heads are about the same price, and I'd think 350 head availability would be better than for fsb's.
