Stiff Gas Pedal - Feels Like Stiff Spring- How To Make it Easier to Press?
My gas pedal on my 289 car is hard to press, feeling like it has too stiff a spring. So I try to ease into it and it lunges. Starts from stop are either almost stalling or too much gas and slipping of clutch.
The linkage seems smooth - just too stiff when pressing down. Is there a way to make it so I can use a lighter touch on the pedal?
Thanks

the first spot i would look is the spring. So depending on the spring tension I think you should be able to tell if it is or it isnt. If your not sure remove the spring and with the vehicle off try to give it some gas and see if the spring caused the problem. most springs unless it is a large spring can be stretched, you just have to pull it past its memory point this will loosen the tension but you have to be careful you dont stretch it past the require length which is from the two spring mounting points. Most auto parts places sell springs in various sizes in packages I would get one of them if you cant make the original spring work. You also need to make sure you have enough tension to close the throttle blades as well.

Anyone Reconfigure Their Throttle Linkage?
I removed the foam square from under the gas pedal, lubed all parts of the linkage and will see how that works. It appears that the linkage may be put together wrong as well. My mechanic says he and others would reconfigure the linkage to be a more direct connection to the carb.

There may be some binding in the pivot at the throttle plate arm, either from wear, looseness, pivot friction, or if the linkage force is being applied to the throttle plate arm at a bad angle (IOW, too much of a radial force component along the throttle arm anstead of the link force being mostly perpendicular to it).
Any cause of "stickiness" that mostly goes away once a small amount of pedal movement has been made will make the initial throttle opening feel "twitchy", and will make you wonder if you know how to drive the car at all.
