Default Hood space

Rebuilt 289 went in the engine bay yesterday. Given the build I knew hood clearance would be an issue and now it is confirmed. By eye everything fits to the carb but not an air cleaner. I have the skill and ability to do the body work for a full fiberglass hood or to cut and add a scoop. I need at least 2 inches. Cowl induction looks good but is really not a Ford thing. Teardrop? Big block style? I like the look of the 67 Shelby scoop which is available for my 66. Any thoughts or experience?

I have a Ford Racing Boss 347 (stroked 302) with a Victor jr. manifold in my 66 and it fits perfectly with a 14" x 3" air cleaner. I have the 66 Shelby hood and it looks like the 67 style sccop on a 65/66 hood would give you even more clearance. What manifold do you have on the engine and what are the other specs?

BTW, I doubt you have a "1955 Mustang Coupe" as it says in your vehicle profile!

Mark, my fat man fingers must have hit the 5 by mistake. It's a 66 coupe. I have a Victor Jr. intake with a Holly 650 carb. By eye it did not look like the 65-66 Shelby scoop would be enough. Space is a concern but so is air flow. I like the 67 Shelby style and I agree it would be enough space. Can you get those without buying the entire fiberglass hood?

Here you go, not bad for $120:

That's the exact same set up I have on my engine with this air cleaner. I have about 1/4" of clearance, but with poly mounts, it should not move much:

I am using a 14 x 3 K&N air filter in the above air cleaner. Here is a pic:

I have a Cougar Eliminator scoop that I purchased from Maier Racing. It looks like a Boss 429 scoop but much shorter. I think it looks very good on 65-68 cars. Here is a picture before it was painted. It looks better with paint.
