When you have an engine that only makes power at around 4,000-4,500 it's not that big of a deal, the engine will start falling flat on it's face under a load before it gets too close to it's mechanical limits. Once you get into higher performance engines it really becomes a necessity to protect the engine. Mine is set at 6,600 and on the street in 1st gear if I nail it, it'll find the limiter really quick.

I still remember the first time I whacked it with this engine. It still had the 3.00 gear and I rolled into it really quickly...the light was set at 5,700rpm and it came on so quick it surprised me, and I ended up shifting at like 6,500. Besides, if you miss a shift at the track without a limiter and nail the gas with the engine still in neutral turning 6,000rpm....yikes.

I recall the Boss 429's had a rev limiter. Don't know how it worked, and I don't think you can buy them aftermarket, but they had them

Now now... don't leave out the little boss! The Boss 302s had them as well.

Heck, you could throw some ole worn out valve springs in there, when it gets above 4k it will start missing and cutting out

MSD makes external rev limiters, could check and see what kind of ignition systems they work with.

The pertronix one that Kalli posted works with the GM HEI style distributors.

I have an MSD Street Fighter. It has an internal rev limiter and works with points or electronic ignition. It also has very close to the same specs as the MSD 6al, but is much cheaper. Jegs has a comparison between the 2 on there website. From about 400hp or less the Street Fighter is a good choice.
