Default Slow starting with Pertronix

I installed the Ignitor 2 a while back. When I had points in it, the car started right up. Now with the Pertronix it cranks a while before kicking over. I ran a new hot wire straight from the ignition so I know it's getting the full 12v to the 12v flamethrower coil. Any ideas??

the failure rate in the pertronix 2 is greater then the number one. Do you still have your old points? When I converted over the recommended thing was to keep the old points int he glove box b/c they do fail. I would try swapping them back in and this would let you know whether the pertronix is toast.

did u pull the dizzy when u made the change? hard starts can sometimes be timing. my car was laboring hard to turn over when i had wayyy too far advanced timing. set it back to correct specs and it cranked right up

You do definitely need to reset the timing after installing the Pertonix unit.

Thanks guys. I will time it again and make sure that is ok. If it is on target and I still have a prob I will put the old points back in and see what happens.

Nice info to know. Let me ask. Does the Pert. #1 have a higher failure rate than that of the #2? or vice versa? I was thinking about getting one...

the points have affect on timing. when you set them and then during time the gap will burn and open. This way the ignition will advance (as they open earlier). Now it you have your timing set with the points not adjusted correctly, your timing will be out of whack when installing the pertronix.
The pertronix II even has a 'feeling' for starting and do all it can for starting quicker.
So as Tad says, you have to time the engine again after installing Pertronix.

i read it as: started up perfectly, then installed pertronix, then it's slow starting. but if he never adjusted ignition after it doesn't surprise me much

Kalli, I did time it right after I installed it and then again about a month ago. It seemed to be right on. It has always started slower with the Pert in than when it had points. I was kind of disappointed actually.
