Default Switched & fused or...

MSD 6AL-2 box has a heavy red and black which goes to battery. Orange and black go to coil. Violet and green go to distributor. Gray goes to dash tach. Now there is smaller red wire they show going to the back post of the ignition switch.
  1. Can I run the small red wire directly to a switched circuit on the fuse panel? Could any problems arise from doing this?
  2. Any specific reason why nothing in the MSD setup is fused? Its expensive stuff and I don't understand why it wouldn't be protected by a fused circuit.

The box is fused internally on the heavy red wire. You need a fused circuit for the small red wire that controls the relay in the box to apply power. Most people use the coil wire as it is fused.

I've moved the box back into the trunk along with the battery, solenoid and all the other electronic. Talked to MSD about this awhile back and was told this was fine to do, just increase the wire size to 12 gauge and its good. So I've got 4 x 12gauge lengths going up passengers side.. 2 - coil & 2 - distributor. I had to add 2 constant and 1 switched fuse panels in the trunk for additional crap so I figured I should be fine running the small red wire from the box to the switched panel about 14" away from it.

The wiring has been fun and is being done neatly. All load wires have been increased in size for safety concerns. Some might think its a wiring nightmare but its well organized & labeled considering I have the Ron Francis setup and about 600 - 700 additional feet of wiring in the car.

btw.. I've seen the loom online that you use and mentioned in the other thread. Nice stuff but I already had all the loom I needed at the garage except for this main run from the main panel back. Might get some for all the hidden runs in the engine bay though.

As long as that small red wire gets a switched 12v it's fine.
