Anger and Frustration - Trouble starting at night - 68 coupe 302
#14
It backfires while I am cranking. It only does this at night when the engine is cold. When i initially turn the key it will feel like its starting and the fast idle will make it rev for a split second before it dies or as soon as i stop cranking it. thats with my foot just sitting on the gas pedal with the choke closed. If I push the gas all the way down it will eventually start and also be revved to like 3k.
try running a wire from the 'I' post of your starter selonoid directly to your coil+ and see if that resolves it (this will feed your coil 12V+ while you crank)

that note: "make it rev for a split second ... as soon as i stop cranking it" makes me believe Kmatch has nailed it.
