Default New Ford guy needs info on engine swap...

I have a 65 coupe and have an oportunity to buy a complete 1990 5.0 roller engine w/65K miles on it. I currently have a carburated early 302 in the car that has a distributor w/pertronics ? installed. I dont want to do an EFI install, I just want to use the stock 5.0 block w/new AFR 165 heads, roller 1.6 rockers and a mild cam. I plan on using my existing carb and whatever else will match up. My car also has a four speed but not sure which one, definitely not a new tranny. I believe I will need a new intake as I'm not sure the stock intake will work with a carb. Also not sure if water pump inlet/outlet will work with my current radiator w/both in/out on the pass. side. Can I use the existing motor mounts ? Can anyone tell me what it will take to use the 5.0 block/parts to complete the swap? Thanks.

The timing cover won't have provision for a mechanical fuel pump, and the cam gear won't have the fuel pump eccentric, you can stick an early model water pump on it, maounts are the same, but you'll need a mechanical clutch linkage adapter since the later blocks don't have the provision for it. Or you could convert to a hydraulic clutch setup. Just use a standard 289/302 carb intake.

Default ok thanks!

Thanks for the info! So let me get this right, I would need to install an electric fuel pump, install a clutch linkage adjuster (any idea where to purchase?), use older style water pump, and I can use or re-use my current aftermarket intake. Any idea on motor mounts? Will I have to change them or use what I have? Again, thanks for the help!

Use your current distributor, make sure the dist. gear is the right one for the cam you get.

I believe I will need a new intake as I'm not sure the stock intake will work with a carb.
If you have a carb intake now it will work.

Also not sure if water pump inlet/outlet will work with my current radiator w/both in/out on the pass. side.
Sure. Use the timing cover, water pump, and fuel pump you have now. You'll need a new 50 oz. conversion harmonic balancer if your old 302 is old enough to be the 28 oz. type, and has 3-bolts holding the pulley on. Don't forget to put the fuel pump eccentric on the new engine' camshaft, or there'll be nothing to operate your pump.

Can I use the existing motor mounts ?
You betcha.

Can anyone tell me what it will take to use the 5.0 block/parts to complete the swap?
If your 302 is the 28 oz. type, you'll need a 50 oz flywheel, too.
You'll need a bracket to attach the equalizer to the block. Common conversion item.

No! Read my above- you already have most of what you need.

Default oops

Didn't see the motor mount info at first, sorry. Can I use the flex plate and damper from the old 302 or use what is on the 5.0 depending on if it was in a manual tranny car? Think the newer engine has a different damper..28 oz. versus 50 oz on older engine. Thanks!

Is there an online business I can contact for the specific conversion parts I would need? Mustangsplus? Mustangdepot? Virginiaclassicmustangs?
