Default B&M Quicksilver shifter

I just picked up a used one and it works perfect but the metal housing was covered in surface rust which is normal since B&M didn't bother to paint it. It's not that big of a deal since its hidden by console but I cleaned it up and it looks like new so I want to put a coat of primer on it so it stays that way.

I tried to take it apart because I don't want to get over spray on the chrome handle or all over the ratchet mechanism but I cant get it out.

It looks like there is a c clip on the pin inside the housing but there is no way to get to it. They sell replacement handles for these so I know it comes apart but I don't know how you're suppose to get to that clip. Has anyone ever tore one of these apart.

I drilled a hole in the bottom of the housing to get a better look at what I thought was another e clip but it turns out it was just a thin rubber washer. I don't know whats holding the pin in there. Its loose but only moves in and out about 1/16" or so. I guess I'll call B&M tomorrow and see if they can help.

I doubt they will be of much help. The pin at bottom center is the one I'm referring to. Once it comes out the handle and ratchet mechanism should come out as well.

So wait, did you actually get it off? I was gonna suggest a wide flathead to just push it off.

The e clip on the outside came off no problem, but the pin wouldn't come out which made me think there was another clip on the inside, but there isnt.

It turns out that the pin isn't the same diameter all the way through. Its bigger in the center so it cant be pressed out. They set the pin in place then riveted the two pieces of the housing together. I just went ahead and cut the rivets off and pulled it apart. I'll just bolt it back together after I paint it.

Ah okay, ya that should be fine I'd imagine. Thats what I've always done when removing rivets and pieceing back together. Or you could re-rivet it i guess too.

All done for now. Looks pretty good for a 40 year old $20 shifter.
