Default Tips on getting engine rebuilt

Some of you guys might remember the cracked exhaust manifold I had, that led to broken bolts in the head, which led to taking off the head, which has led to the head needing to be worked on and resurfaced.
Now the whole block looks like it could use some renewing. And that is the last thing my dad wanted. But two main questions:

How complicated is pulling the engine?

How much do you think rebuilding the Inline-6 200 will cost? (120,000 miles, nothing visibly broken)

Also I would appreciate any tips on removing the engine and reinstalling it or getting the thing rebuilt. By the way, we would have a machinist we know do the work.

Easy and cheap. You can get a basic rebuild kit for American I6's for dirt cheap.

Yeah I've seen some kits for about $350 (haven't checked around a whole lot) But I would like this guy to do the machine work and I don't have tools like ring compressors or expanders and plus my dad would probably never let me touch those things with this engine, who knows.

Any more tips?

You already did 1/2 the job, taking the exhaust side off. Not much left to do to pull it but the tranny bolts (or take it out with the trans attached and get it refreshed while your at it. ) motor mount bolts, undo wiring to sensors, & remove the fan & radiator (take off the hood too). Hardest part used to be finding a cherry picker to borrow, but now you can go to harbor freight and pick one up cheap.

Costs, dunno, call the machine shop you plan on using, and talk to them. A lot depends on what needs to be done once they take it apart. Does it need to be bored or not? Could be a simple rering or you might have to go for a bore and pistons

Do you think its possible to life the engine with the lifter on the passenger side of the car? I don't really have enough room in front of the car without moving it

Are I6's more expensive to work on then the 8's? I had my 289 rebuilt and Bored for $850.00 from a California shop. They even Painted the block and heads for me at that price.

Wow that seems like a really good price rst08tierney. That's kind of more like I expected, but 1200 max. I find it hard to believe a 289 v8 would cost more than a 200 I6. But I guess that depends on what work you have to get done, like egd said.

BA Mustang, I still can't believe you rebuilt that engine for 2k and now you are dumping it for a 5.0

I didn't have it rebuilt, the previous owner did. When they told us how much it cost we told them they should have put a 5.0 in it.

Honestly don't know. I think the PO just wanted it done and didn't search around for a cheaper place, but I6 parts are more expensive than V8 parts so that could be a reason.
