Default Secondary Exhaust/ Crankcase Ventilation?

I have a '65 3.3 6cyl automatic. There is a 1 inch steel pipe that comes out the left side of engine by cylinder one. It is apr. 1 ft long, ports exhaust smoke of some kind and ends below engine putting exhaust gas into engine compartment and hence into passenger compartment. Can someone tell me what purpose this is supposed to serve and where it should be leading to instead of below engine?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hi Wraith88,
I don't think your 65 came with a 3.3 L engine (unless a 200 CID is a 3.3). Are you sure it's connected to the exhaust system? They did have road draft tubes on early 60's engines. These tubes vented the cranckcase blow-by overboard. In later cars, the created the PCV system and then finally when to a totally "closed" system that had a PCV and a tube from the valve cover (oil cap) to the air cleaner.jlg

The 200 is a 3.3.

Can you post a picture of the tube?

My 289 has one of those and I really hate it. It comes out of the left valve cover and down below the car. It is bolted top and bottom. I had to wrestle the damn thing completely off to get the valve cover off, and putting it back on was even worse. I believe it causes suction as the car moves forward which then pulls out the blow by. I can see it venting some sort of stuff when the car is just ideling. Given it's location that vented gas is going to end up in the area of the passenger compartment unless everything is sealed up real well.

It's easy to convert over to a PCV system. You just need some valve covers
that have the fittings, a hose to the carb, the breather and PCV valve. The origional valve covers may be able to be adapted but it's cleaner just to get new covers. Then you won't have to breath that stuff too.

Thanks all for your input. It is the 200 CID. I'm not sure if it is the same as the port from the valve cover on the 289. This does not come off the valve cover but specifically off the engine block. It puts out a lot of smoke. Is it really just supposed to be where it is? Has anyone ever redirected the output on one of these to somewhere else?
