Default Fine metal shavings in my dizzy!

While troubleshooting my ignition problem, I noticed the inside of my stock dizzy, with Pertronix II module, has a whole bunch of metal dust (fine shavings) I haven't seen before.

Anybody see this before? What could this be from?

I dont know about inside the distributor, but I did have metal flakes inside my carburetor causing flooding issues. Turns out when I had it rebuilt the guy used Teflon tape around the threads of the filter.

i once had a stock dizzy where the contact breaker plate came loose. to be ablke to keep driving i disabled the vac advance in just bolting it down. the screw I used was a tad too large and was eating up that screw. metal shavings (plenty) in that dizzy. of course ran crap as the spark would go anywhere but my spark plugs. i'd say you lost something in there .. something maybe fell off??!

Check your mechanical advance weights. SOmetime they wear, and the ends extend far enough to hit the body of the distributer.

I think sometimes a high voltage coil can arc to ground inside the distributor and vaporize little bits of anything metal it jumps to. The end result is usually lots of red dust (iron oxide = rust), and occasionally advance weights that are welded solidly into one position. Early GM HEI distributors were notorious for this.
