I keep seeing carburetor spacers everywhere, however, I have to claim ignorance--I have no idea what they do/how the work. Anyone want to lead me to the promised land?

BTW: anyone seen war of the worlds? Features a nice 66 shelby for a short scene. Plus tom cruise' character building a 302 in his kitchen. (good movie too)

Well in my case, I needed to use a spacer so that my air cleaner would clear my distributor.

The other reasons are probably to use them to help accelerate the air fule mixture better, a 2 inch spacer may make a slight difference?


BTW: Saw war of the worlds yesterday! took my son! Overall very cool film! not perfect but very entertaining!

This gives some explanation. Basically it creates a space for the fuel to atomize better for a cleaner burn.

It also keeps heat away from your carburetor so you don't have vapor lock. That is, if you use something like a phenolic spacer.
