Hedman makes a wide variety of long tube headers for Mustangs and they are pretty decent on there pricing compared to Hooker and some other brands. JBA makes an awesome mid-length header that will clear the Z bar but they are a little bit more money. My dads currently running a set of JBA mid-lengths w his AOD and they are a well designed excellent quality header.

I tried to fix your question a bit since it hurt to read. This should help you get some more responses.

I would go to the hooker headers if you wanted to change brands. I would not go to shorty headers, they do not give you horsepower and torque gains like long tube headers. I would not go back to hi-po exhaust manifolds, they are too restrictive.

JBA mid-lengths ftw! As stated above.. awesome header, high quality, and they give great power.

I switched from tube headers to HP manifolds after years of dealing with the heat, noise and leaks of the tubes. Other than a tiny power loss at very high rpm, no problems at all since then, and how often do you tach it up to 6000? With me maybe a couple times a day, but most even less than that.

About the Tri-Y getting hit by the equalizer- Use the 289HP equalizer, and if necessesary, use a 65 upper rod and 66 lower rod to get more adjustability.

The 289HP equalizer tucks the lower arm closer to the engine block. The 65 clutch was adjusted using a threaded upper rod. The 66 was adjusted using a threaded telescopic lower rod. Using the 66, you simply make the rod a length that will not contact the Tri-Y's, then adjust the linkage 65 style using the upper rod.
