i have dry cork as well. no problems there.

If the valve covers are stamped steel (as opposed to cast aluminum), make sure you straighten the holes out first. Then install dry.

+1. Use some thing to back them and tap them flat. You want to check the flange with a straight edge as well. Like mentioned above, often the VCs are out of whack from being over torqued.
