Question Where to buy a auto transmission for 65 6cyl?

Hi Everyone,

My 65 mustang has a 2-speed auto in it and its acting up. Instead of rebuilding it I want to put a 3 speed auto in it. I don't want any high performance and I don't want to buy one that just came out of another car. I would prefer to get one from a place that has been rebuilt and ready to go so no worries down the road for a while.

Any suggestions on where to get one without spending so much? So far I've seen one for $999. I was hoping for under $500 but I bet that will only be a local buy from a person if I can even find one.

Thanks

Warren

A C-4 is the way I would go, but you will almost certainly pay more than $400...

Conversion cost will apply, which consists of nasty little thinge that will need to be changet to complete the swap.

This stuff might include stuff like linkage for shifter and kickdown, flexplate, bolts, mounts, tranny cooler lines etc.

A "new" (new rebuilt) C-4 will cost about twice that by itself, likely not including the TQ.

For some reason those little C-4s are expensive. Most trannys of the same era are a lot less... go figure..

I think a c-4 conversion is a good move, but expect to pay at least 3 times your desired price unless you decide to take a chance on a used one complete.

It has a 2 speed? I have never heard of that. I would hink it would have a C4.

You can pick up good C4s around here for a few hunderd. You can get a rebuilt one for 500 or so.

I would upgrade it to an AOD for the overdrive.

All auto trans Mustangs were factory-equipped with 3-speed automatics. Unless your car has been victim of an extremely weird conversion, you already have a 3-speed. Why do you think it's a 2-speed?

(I ask this with a good idea of the answer.)

That's easy. People want them. Until recently, you couldn't use a column-shift C4 in a Mustang, due to the reversed shift lever on the case. This has now changed, since the Mustang style lever has become available new.

The shifter makes it appear to only have 2 forward gears.

The little white dot gives you 2-3 only, for driving in mud, rain, and snow, to reduce wheelspin.

The green dot gives you normal 1-2-3 shifting.

My 64.5 170-I6 has a C4, I am putting it into the shop for a complete rebuild(C4) and new Universal joint for just under $600.
