Default What is a good transmission?

I found a 351w that a guy built he said its pushing around 450-500 horsepower. He said he had a stock c4 hooked up to it and that sounds a little weird. I didn't know that they could withstand that much horsepower. I was wondering what would be a good transmission to hook up to it without spending thousands of dollars. Any advice is appreciated.

with that much power... You're kind of limited when cost is involved. Top Loader 4 speed if you want a Standard... Don't take my word with this but I think C6s were used primarily on Big blocks from factory, and c4s on small blocks *I.E. 351w* So it "SHOULDN'T" be much of a problem, but if you don't want to trust it with that much power... a c6 if you want to stick with automatics... which a lot of these can be found in Salvage yards with few new parts needing to be purchased...
AOD's I've read afew places can be Cheap by comparison but I haven't looked much into it being it's an automatic Tranny and I personally am going for a 5spd.
AOD's would also yield better gas mileage.

Hope that helps a bit.

TKO600 for a 5-speed manual or an AOD for an overdrive automatic.

A good trans that will reliably hold power ain't cheap. The TKO's now are going for around $2,000-2,200 new, plus all the other crap you need to swap them. Putting a TKO in brand new you're looking at around $3,000-3,500 realistically. Couldn't tell you on automatics, but I know there are a lot of people running C4's behind powerful engines.

You can buy built C4's designed to handle that much power. I think even Summit has some.

C6's will hold a lot of power, but they're horribly inefficient. IIRC, they use something like 40% of the power produced. You make up some of that in torque multiplication, but still, that's a lot of power going to waste.

C-4s should not be under rated...

Stock they can be pretty good, and they can be built to hold upwards of 1,000 HP...

It seems as if the the little C-4 is working so far.... and if it were me I would run it till it broke and then get a better c-4 to replace it...

It doesn't need to be complicated...

For one reason or another, "built" C-4s seem to be kind of expensive when compared to other transmissions of the same era, but still, when the cost of conversion is considered, a built up C-4 makes more sense...

I like C-4s....

well i mean i dont know if he is selling the transmission too but i will check into that. I was looking for one that is efficient but not waste a lot of the power the motor is making.
