Default 302 to 351W swap Question...

I'm doing a 302 to a 351 Windsor engine swap in a '72 Mustang Convertible. The problem is this... the 351 I bought wasn't complete. i.e. no rocker arms, lifters, or pushrods, not to mention power steering pump and A/C mounting brackets. However, I do have a complete 302. I've found this part no. on Summit FMS-M-8511-B351 which sounds exactly like what I need... I'm reluctant to purchase it, though, because in actually LOOKING at everything on the vehicle it doesn't make sense with what I have. I swear I think I might be missing something off of the "complete" (haha) 302. What would be GREAT would be a picture of one of these accessory brackets in action! Also, can anyone verify that a belt "tensioner" is used between the harmonic balancer and the A/C? Does the A/C mount on the front very top right of the engine? (It's the first thing I see on the whole engine, and I don't recall seeing Mustangs with the A/C compressor being the main item...) Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!

Best advice would be to find a junker that has the parts you need and learn from that, or another car like yours for a model.

I agree, but I've called several junk yards and they laugh at me and tell me they haven't had an early 70s model car in years. Wonderful! Is the Summit bracket the way to go? Can anyone vouch for it???

Here's some more specific info..

I got the A/C, P/S, and related brackets from the 302. In moving them over to the 351, the A/C goes on the right head (looking at the engine from the front dead-on) and sits on top of the bracket. The P/S pump has a small bracket that bolts onto the water pump. That can be attached, but when I use the bracket that's on the P/S pump one of the bolts doesn't line-up (which is fine, because the heads are taller/wider than the 302) and the bolt head for the A/C bracket hits the P/S pump bracket as well. Now granted, if this were a 302, everything looks like it would work great, but because of the taller/wider heads, it's not. When you did a swap, did you have an A/C and P/S pump? If so, did you have to buy a bracket or is there some simple fix that I'm missing?

Mine is such a Frankenstein with no AC or PS that I had to improvise with belt lengths and brackets.
Ask summit to provide a sketch from the manufacturer to determine if the holes will line up.
The heads themselves should not that different, but the block does move them up and out...

lol, Frankenstein, eh?

I'm itchin to get this thing in the car, so I'll just bolt up the P/S with just the adjustment bolt. It should hold enough for me to drop it in the car and fire it up! I won't be driving or anything, so no stress will actually be on the pump itself. I can go without A/C for a while... (it is a vert, after all) but I'd really like to get it hooked up eventually. It'd be great if someone has actually done this exact thing before! But thanks for all your help!!!!

All I can add is that I have a belt tensioner pulley for the air to crank pulley on my 65 289.

Does that pulley bolt onto the water pump and is pretty much directly above the water pump pulley?

Yes. That is the general location. It could very well be the same for your 72, but I don't know. You can order those from many vendors. See if you can locate the idler arm here on my 65 289.
Again, I know nothing about the location of this idler arm on your 72, but just wanted to give you a general idea.

Bingo, Soaring! I can clearly see your compressor and idler pullies (sp?) in the picture. Now if I can only adapt the brackets from my 302 to the 351W... I'll get some pics and post the work that I'm currently doing on the car to see what everyone thinks... Thanks for the help all! Any more info is gladly welcomed, though!

Markstang, I don't see an A/C compressor or a pulley in your pic... I assume the pulley mounts right on top of your water pump, though?
