Best way to remove a vinyl top without damaging things.
Adding to my list of things to do to my car I am going to add the removal of the vinyl top. I got in contact with the PO of my car and he let me know that the paint came before the top so there is paint underneath it. I have seen what they can do to the roof of your car and I'm not the biggest fan of that and I have a chance to prevent it. But I imagine my monkey rip off roof would not be the best approach to remove it without damaging the paint underneath. The only other time I removed one was on a completely desconstructed car and paint was not a concern. What would be the best course of action removal of the top and adhesive?

You would want to get the trim pieces off first by taking out the interior rear quarter peices andremoving the nuts. You will have to keep and reinstall the trim because of the holes left on the top of the quarter panel. Take off the windshield and rear window trim and then I would say you could use a heat gun or a heavy duty blowdryer on a hot day to peel off the top. You might be able to get some of the glue off with a little thinner, but you would be going into the clear too or at least softening it up.

Removing the trim doesn't sound too bad but sounds like I may have to borrow the roommates blowdryer for the roof. The thinner just sounds unpleasant. There isn't any other industrial strenght glue remover or tool to remove the glue? A guy I work with suggested a rubber wheel and then color sand and or polish.
