Oil 'slinger'
#11
You can call it a baffle or slinger, but it helps oil the chain as well as guarding the seal. Look on the inside of the timing cover, and you'll see the gutter that drains onto it.

Thanks for the photo and clearing that up for me. I'm still looking but it isn't looking good so far in locating it. Your pic also shows that its shaped quite a bit differently from the one I found which must be off the AMC 304.

Not needed. Yes, oil gets on the chain and gear not only from the distributor gear oiling hole at the front of the lifter valley, but the 2 drain holes at the front of each head pour oil directly down onto the dizzy gear and it splashes on the chain etc. I have no slinger, baffle or whatever you want to call it and the front seal doesn't leak, hasn't for years. The timing chain/gears are entirely splash oiled from oil return up top.

ok thanks all. I stopped into my machine shop and they said they hadn't installed one in 15 years now. I got back to the garage and continued on forward and up. I'll post some pics later as I'm running out again.

Edelbrock, Comp Cams, and Cloyes all say that you don't need the slinger with their full roller timing sets. Maybe it was necessary with the stock nylon-coated timing gears, but not with a good roller set.
